Early Field Performance of Small-Sized Silver Birch and Scots Pine Container Seedlings at Different Planting Depths

چکیده

Deep planting is recommended in Nordic countries only for normal-sized container seedlings planted on mounds. Its effects smaller-sized are poorly understood. We studied the of depth early field performance small-sized silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings. Silver (mean height 16 cm) were to depths 3, 6 8 cm spot mounds May 2016. 9 2, 5 inverted September 2018 2019. At end first growing season, deeper-planted tallest, as opposed However, differences between not apparent until second season both tree species. Deeper decreased damage which was observed birch. Based our findings, can be safely at 6–8 depths, if least 20% 50% their shoots, respectively, above ground.

Chlorophyll Determination in Silver Birch and Scots Pine Foliage from Hyperspectral Data

Silver Birch (Betula pendula Roth), a pioneer tree species, and Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) used for revegetation are typical tree species in the mine reclamation area of the Sokolov Basin (West Bohemia, the Czech Republic). Chlorophyll content in their foliage can be used as one of the indicators of tree stress caused by adverse soil conditions with heavy metal contamination being the maj...

Extending the Planting Period of Dormant and Growing Norway Spruce Container Seedlings to Early Summer

In order to make mechanized planting economically viable, the present spring planting period for Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seedlings in Scandinavia needs to be extended. To evaluate the possibilities to extend the planting period, six field experiments were established in four years during which frozen-stored, dormant seedlings and actively growing seedlings targeted for spring pl...

Elongation of Scots Pine Seedlings under Blue Light Depletion

The effect of blue light (400–500 nm) removal on the elongation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvetris L.) seedlings was investigated in a field experiment in Northern Finland during two growing seasons. The seedlings were grown in plexiglass chambers and ambient control plots. The blue wavelengths were removed from the light spectrum by using chambers made of orange plexiglass. The results of nearly d...

Dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen leaching from Scots pine, Norway spruce and silver birch stands in southern Sweden

The effects of three common tree species – Scots pine, Norway spruce and silver birch – on leaching of dissolved organic carbon and dissolved nitrogen were studied in an experimental forest with podzolised soils in southern Sweden. We analyzed soil water collected with lysimeters and modeled water fluxes to estimate dissolved C and N fluxes. Specific UV absorbance (SUVA) was analyzed to get inf...

Increasing Pine Survival and Early Growth by Planting “morphologically Improved” Seedlings

“Morphologically improved” seedlings (large-diameter seedlings grown at low nursery spacings) have a higher probability of survival (about 5% better) than regular seedlings since they have larger root systems, a higher root-weight ratio (root dry weight/seedling dry weight), and have a greater root growth potential. In addition, these seedlings will grow faster during the first several years af...
